Fundraiser Of The Year Award

Posted 8/24/2016

Thank you to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust for blessing us with the 2016 Fundraiser Of The Year Award! It is an absolute honour to accept this award on behalf of everyone who had supported and helped us in any way to continue our much needed work. Without our volunteers and fundraisers we wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand for our services, so we are beyond grateful for all your kind and generous support.

I want to share, for all the bereaved parents who can't imagine they will ever feel real, authentic joy and happiness ever again - you will - one day, when you least expect it, something will trigger it, as receiving this award did for me. It took me a while to realise why what I was feeling felt so hugely significant, it was because I hadn't felt like this since before Lily died, and I had accepted that I may never feel real joy ever again. Experiencing such profound loss does this, makes you believe you will never be truly happy again. So it took me by surprise, to realise that this unfamiliar, strangely powerful emotion I was feeling was in fact pure joy and happiness, it stayed with me briefly, I wanted to cling to that feeling, but it passed. But now I know it is possible, to feel deep, authentic, pure, joy again after loss. Little by little, as we heal, tiny sparks of joy will return. Part of me will always grieve for my child, but now I know it is possible for grief and joy to coexist.

Some pictures of the UHMBT Fundraiser of the Year Award, such a joyous validation of all OUR hard work - huge thanks to everyone who has supported Tigerlily Trust and helped us to attain this award. My parents accepted it on our behalf on the evening and then presented it to me, and some beautiful congratulatory flowers given to me by one of our brave parents a few days later. This award represents HOPE... hope for the future of Tigerlily Trust, hope for all parents who are hurting, and hope for mending our broken hearts H.O.P.E. = Hold. On. Pain. Ends.
Love and light, Val x x x

One Bereaved Parent's Story

Posted 4/2/2016

Jade : William’s Story

“I would like to share my story and pregnancy loss and stillbirth as a bereaved mother myself.

On the 28th Feb 2015 I found out I was expecting my first child totally unexpected. So many mixed emotions and feelings as expected, I was nervous but also exited at the thought of being a mother. Throughout the first 12 weeks I was walking on eggshells worried about miscarriage or hurting my baby. Three months quickly came around and it was time for my 12 week scan, there on the screen was a little baby, moving away with a strong heartbeat, no concerns at all and I was sent away. I considered myself as "safe" now and started getting my head around the idea of being a mum, it all became real, little kicks, nappies, clothes and essentials taking over my bedroom! 20 weeks came and it was time for my scan, there on the screen was a perfect baby boy, healthy, kicking and developing as normal. No concerns or queries. Kicks became stronger and I learnt his daily routine. Nursery furniture and a pram was on order, a growing belly and all the unpleasant parts too!! Everything was perfect, until at 24 weeks his movements changed, becoming less and less frequent, I grew concerned and 3 times that week I took myself to the labour ward to get checked, everything was fine. Regardless of the reassurance I was concerned, I felt in my gut that something wasn't right, it wasn't like him to not move, sometimes he would go 18 hours without a movement, move once or twice and then stop for 12 hours. I was very concerned. Finally at 25 weeks and 1 day, still not happy with my feeling of dread and panic, I decided to go up to the labour ward once again. This time everything wasn't okay and my world was about to tip upside down. As I laid on the bed my stomach was doing flips with worry, I wasn't feeling positive about this trip. The midwife proceeded to use a handheld Doppler to find the heartbeat, after 2 minutes of trying without success she went to bring the consultant with a scanning machine. As they scanned me I saw the colour drain from their faces and the screen turn away. " I'm sorry, there is no heartbeat" the words that forever haunt me. So many thoughts and emotions running through my head, now what? Was it my fault? My baby is dead? So much emotion knowing I was going to give birth to a baby which I couldn't take home. I was scared and heartbroken. After 2 days of different doctors confirming his death, I was induced. I was bombarded with information, doctors using words like "postmortem" "funeral" "death register" all while I was trying to understand what was happening. Finally at 9pm after a 5 hour labour I gave birth to my son. William, weighing 1lb 5oz, overwhelmed with love, pain and sorrow I looked at his beautiful face, perfect fine dark hair and chubby cheeks, he was unreal, my heart ached with love and sorrow at his death. We were provided with a cuddle cot and clothes so we could spend 24 previous hours taking pictures, prints and having endless cuddles. I spent the whole time stroking his hair, kissing his cheeks and breathing in his beautiful smell, the smell of a mothers own baby is simply amazing and something I will remember forever. We had specialist midwifes providing support along with the hospital Chaplin who blessed William. 2 weeks later and planning, it was time for his funeral, heartbreaking but very special, we decided to have William cremated so I could bring him home. I am forever haunted by the words " sorry, there is no heartbeat" but with the help of the Tigerlily Trust charity I am learning to cope with what had happened and I will forever be thankful for the time I spent with him! Tigerlily Trust have been there, they have helped me, they have provided me with support from day one, making each day more bearable. If I had any advice for pregnant woman, it would be to listen to your gut instincts, I knew something was wrong but unfortunately nothing could have been done. Just remember ladies, and fathers too, that you are not alone xx”

Written by Jade Mansell in memory of William.

Breaking The Silence Surrounding Stillbirth And Baby Loss

Posted 1/30/2016

The Solid Life of Sugar Water

Deep respect to Jack Thorne and The Dukes Theatre for helping to 'break the silence' surrounding baby loss and bringing this performance to Lancaster.

There’s two chances to see an awardwinning play at The Dukes in Lancaster just days before it takes to the stage of The National Theatre.

The Solid Life of Sugar Water is a story of love, loss, recovery, and how a couple communicate in the wake of a tragedy.

This tender, compelling and unsettling play, which can be seen on February 16 and 17, follows the journey of a young couple as they attempt to reconnect with each other following a stillbirth.

Tigerlily Trust will be there offering support and information after each performance. We appreciate the sensitivity of this play, and how it will be an intensely emotional experience for anyone who has suffered baby loss, we want to be there for anyone who wishes to talk after the performance. It is also an opportunity for us to raise awareness and help to shatter the silence surrounding baby loss. If you wish to attend but would like support, Val will be watching the Tuesday 16th performance and you can contact her beforehand by emailing enquiries@tigerlilytrust.co.uk

It’s the work of Jack Thorne, an awardwinning writer for stage, television and film who has written the new Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play opening in London’s West End this summer. He recently adapted the cult novel and film Let the Right One In for the stage.

The Solid Life of Sugar Water is performed by the acclaimed Graeae Theatre Company, once run by former Dukes artistic director Euan Marshall, which has gained a reputation for breaking down barriers, challenging preconceptions and boldly placing Deaf and disabled artists centrestage.

Graeae’s signature characteristic is creatively integrating sign language, captioning and audio description to engage with both disabled and non-disabled audiences. This play was crowned the Most Accessible Show at the Accessible Fringe Awards 2015.

Arthur Hughes and Genevieve Barr will reprise the roles they created for the successful run at the 2015 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Arthur has appeared in several Richard Burton Company productions and was a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company in 2013, receiving the Carleton Hobbs Award. Genevieve is best known for BBC One primetime drama The Silence for which she received BAFTA and International Emmy nominations for best actress. She has also appeared in Shameless.

The Solid Life of Sugar Water is recommended for ages 16 plus. It contains language of an adult and sexual nature. It calls in to The Dukes during a national tour which ends with a three-week run at the National Theatre.

Tickets are priced £13/£11 concessions. There will be a post show talk-back after the February 16 performance.

For more information and to book, ring The Dukes box office on 01524 598500 or visit www.dukes-lancaster.org

Tigerlily Trust Remembrance Celebration 2015

Posted 10/21/2015

"Thank you for the gift of your light in our world"

Once again I would like to thank everyone who came along to join with us in the global wave of light to honour and remember all our babies and children. It was a beautiful evening surrounded by such love, such care, such deep compassion. I missed connecting with a few people I know, and I wish there was more time to speak to everyone, but please do get in touch any time if I can be of service, I would love to hear from you.

Anna, Sue and Sara sang so beautifully for us once agin, and Debra - Inspirational Ceremonies read our babies and children's names with heart and love. Three brave and courageous parents read poetry for us, thank you Claire, Peter and Naomi, you were amazing! Pauline and Donna once again offered us their time to provide us with refreshments, parents brought biscuits, 1657 Chocolate House looked after us with their delicious chocolates, Wax Lyrical gave us the tea light candles, Time4Flowers gave us the beautiful lilies. Each and every person contributed in some way to making the evening as special as it was.

We shed tears, we held each other, we smiled, we shared, and we all got to unite on this special day of remembrance. For the parents who couldn't attend we lit candles for their babies and made them a special star. I want to say a special thank you to Poppy, who read me a poem afterwards that she'd written especially for her big sister who's 8th Heavenly Birthday was only a few days after and who gave me a little butterfly she'd made for Lily's Birthday. I was overcome with emotion when my dear friend Cathie gave me a gift for Lily's birthday too, we shared a very special moment that I will never forget. My heart went out to every parent in the room, but even more so to the more recently bereaved parents and families who were so brave to come along and join us, my wish is that you found some peace, some comfort, and hope for the future. I am so grateful and so blessed to know all of you, some only a little yet, but nevertheless blessed to be walking this path of grief and healing with so many wonderful souls. Thank you for your presence, your openness, your sharing, and your heartfelt goodnights. Blessings and love to you x

All the babies and children's stars can be found on our Facebook Page, and anyone who would like their star posting out to them please email Val at enquiries@tigerlilytrust.co.uk with your address and baby's name and I will do that for you.

Here are a few pictures from the evening, wishing you all love and light, Val x x x

"Angel Dads & Angel Mums "

Author: Judi Walker

(Adapted)

We have shared our tears and our sorrow,

We have given encouragement to each other,

Given hope for a brighter tomorrow,

We share the title of grieving Father - grieving Mother.

Some of us lost older daughters or sons,

Who we watched grow over the years,

Some have lost their babies before their lives begun,

But no matter the age , we cry the same tears.

We understand each others pain,

The bond we share is very strong,

With each other there is no need to explain,

The path we walk is hard and long.

Our children brought us together,

They didn't want us on this journey alone,

They knew we needed each other,

To survive the pain of them being gone.

So take my hand my friend,

We may stumble and fall along the way,

But we'll get up and try again,

Because together we can make it day by day.

We can give each other hope,

We'll create a place where we belong,

Together we will find ways to cope,

Because we are Angel Dads & Angel Mums and together we are strong!

October 2015 Fundraising Challenge

Posted 9/2/2015

International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

Do you think you could raise £50 for charity in one month?

Please join our October International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month fundraising challenge.
We'd love to get 100 people to raise £50 each to raise the funds to supply 100 Remembrance Boxes. Every £50 will provide 1 Remembrance Box or 4 Miscarriage Care Packages for our hospitals to give to bereaved parents. They contain items to encourage parents to make and collect precious memories with their baby in the short time they have, as well as resources and support for when they return home. For those of us who have had our child die these treasures are all we have left to help us connect with and remember our precious child. They are so important in our grieving process and ultimately help to promote healing.

We want to increase the service we provide locally to make sure every bereaved parent receives something to mark the little life they just lost. To do this we need to provide an extra 780 Miscarriage Care Packages per year just to our local hospitals, which will cost £11,700.

Ultimately we want to provide these for all our local GP Surgeries too, so that families suffering early miscarriages are also given support at their time of loss. This is our dream goal and something we are working on with our fundraising challenges.

Let me know if you'd like to join in this very special heartfelt challenge.

You need not have experienced the loss of a baby, in order to help us. You can raise the funds in any way that you wish - a sponsored challenge, asking friends and family, having a cake sale or coffee morning, having a raffle, organising an event, collecting loose change….

We have a Virgin Money Giving page that you can link to in order to raise money, publicise your event, and help raise awareness. They will transfer all funds raised to Tigerlily Trust, so it's simple and all done for you.
Let us see how many people we could help…
Love and blessings, Val x x x

Fundraising Garden Party

Posted 7/13/2015

On Saturday I had the privilege of spending a truly heartwarming afternoon with the most amazing family, their family, friends and neighbours at a garden party organised by Claire and Stephen in honour of their daughter Rosie.

Rosie would have been celebrating her 10th birthday this year, and her mum Claire had promised herself that, in Rosie’s 10th year, they would do a big fundraiser in her memory.

The sun was shining, there was an abundance of delicious sandwiches and home made cakes, the bouncy castles, face painting, lucky dip, games and inflatables were seriously enjoyed by all the youngsters. Fantastic prizes were donated for the raffle, and there was even a barbecue in the evening for anyone who wished to stay later.

Claire and I spoke about how hard it is every year - not to be organising a party on your baby’s birthday, not to able to celebrate in all the ways you so longed to. Having to find your own quiet ways to honour your baby’s special day. Which is what made this so absolutely beautiful to be part of - so many people gathered together to celebrate Rosie, a party for a special little girl who will always be remembered and always loved.

I want to say a few huge THANK YOU’s firstly to Claire and Stephen for making such a wonderful day for everyone, and to Claire’s parents Joan and Gordon for all their support and organisation of the day, and not forgetting Stephen’s parents who looked after the raffle all day and did a sterling job. Thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate, made delicious cakes, bought raffle tickets, donated, and just made the most heart-full special day filled with love and true spirit of community.

Thank you to everyone who came over to speak to me and enquire about Tigerlily Trust, thank you for sharing some of your own personal journey’s with me, and thank you for your generosity.

I also got to meet in person some of the wonderful knitters who have been sending parcels of knitting for our appeal. It was a real joy to put faces to names.

I met an old friend again after many years, and also one of the lovely midwives who looked after us when I was in the early stages of labour with Lily - so all in all it was  an emotional day.

The whole time I was so aware of the precious little girl we were honouring, her 10 red balloons dancing above us, her siblings running around thoroughly enjoying themselves, but most of all the obvious love, warmth, care, support, friendship and utterly wonderful generosity of spirit from everyone who had been touched in some way by Rosie’s brief whisper of life. Anyone who has lost their child or has supported a relative or friend who has, knows that “ Each new life, no matter how brief, forever changes the world.”

Thank you Rosie, thank you Claire and Stephen, thank you everyone for your support, you raised an amazing £1,200 on the day, which with Gift Aid will rise again.

What a tremendous tribute to Rosie and her family and friends.

Together you have made it possible for Tigerlily Trust to support so many more bereaved families in our local area in Rosie’s memory.

A truly blessed day.

Be Gentle With Yourselves

Posted 5/2/2015

The birth of new babies can sometimes be hard on bereaved parents, especially if their own baby was the same sex or has a special date at a similar time. With a new royal baby being the focus of so much media attention, the constant stream of updates can feel overwhelming. So, while we are delighted to hear that Kate and William have safely welcomed a little princess into the world, we would like to send our love and offer our support to all the bereaved parents who might be finding things difficult at the moment. Please be gentle on yourselves. You are not alone.
Love and light, Val x x x

October 15th International Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Day + Global Wave of Light
We are very grateful to Scott and Claire for their generous hospitality in hosting us for our annual Remembrance Celebration. We invite you to join us for a very special evening remembering and celebrating all our babies and children gone to soon.
On this special date, we will light candles and be part of the global wave of light around the world. It will be an evening of remembering and honouring our babies, sharing and connecting with those who have travelled this path and those who help us to travel it.
If you would like to come along, please join our event on Facebook - to help us prepare for accommodating you.

Doors open 6pm please come early to allow time for candle lighting and putting an angel on our remembrance tree in memory of your baby or child.
There will be tea and coffee afterwards and time to talk and connect with each other.
We hope to see you there, message or email Val with any questions you may have, I will do my best to answer - enquiries@tigerlilytrust.co.uk

We understand that some of you may wish to join us for the Remembrance Celebration but be unable to attend - with this in mind we would like to offer you a way to include your precious babies too. If you send us their name in an email we will honour them by lighting a candle for them and speaking their name with all our babies during the ceremony.
United we honour our precious ones, together we help each other to heal.
Love and blessings, Val x x x
